An exploratory experience for an interactive documentary.

interaction & visual design

I had the great honor to work in collaboration with a number of designers and developers on this truly unique interactive documentary. Creators James George and Jonathan Minard describe the film as asking "questions about the future of creativity at a time when algorithms play an important role in shaping culture."

The film screened worldwide, and was awarded the Tribeca Film Festival Transmedia Award and NY Design Award in 2014.

One of the biggest challenges of the project was defining the cadence and duration of the experience, which the creators wanted to feel infinite.

To begin the experience, the user chooses a question to explore. The film's algorithm or 'story engine' then creates a story by selecting a series of interview clips relevant to the user's selection. The user may alter their story by selecting a new question, or by choosing to research a specific topic, person, or visual system.

A visual system is an interactive visual that the user can explore while they listen to the speaker discuss the current topic.

The user can click the speaker at any time to learn more about them and view additional interview clips.

In research mode, the user is able to generate a story based on a single concept, artist, or visual.
